if photography was the DOPE GAME, everybody tryin to get RICH QUICK would be in jail! You gotta establish your name, network, character, etc… Take the Street Ethics and transfer them. Now, If you were a scumbag before you became a Shooter, You will be a scumbag shooter. If you were solid before you became a shooter, you will be a solid shooter.

To be completely honest I love photography but I did in fact buy my camera with intentions to make this a career. It's been a couple months since then and now I've reached a point where I really don't give a shit if this is my career at some point ima shoot regardless there's nothing better than getting home and throwing your flicks up on the computer and seeing an absolute banger that you shot. That alone is more satisfying than any gig or paycheck. So end of the day whether I become rich and famous or not we still outside and we still doin shit 🙏🙏

Entering any creative field in hopes that it will make you wealthy, can feel rather unrealistic. Just in the sense that most people want such a thing as ; “I shoot what I want, how I want, when I want”. Hard truth is, wether you work yourself to that point or not, you’re gonna have to go through some time of bringing others visions to life more than likely. Often shooting those corporate gigs are as boring as they sound. I think it’s safe to say very few people pick up a camera with the end goal being corporate gigs. But those will pay the bills or even just be a means of upgrading equipment along the way if you feel the need/desire to.

So be realistic with what is required to reach a point where you can rely on your creativity and let it pay the bills. It’s fully possible though. I’ve worked in photo & video for over 10 years and just recently have reached a position locally where I can pick and choose the projects I take on. Took a lot of corporate gigs along the way. Lots of head shots. Lots of family portraits. All of which couldn’t be more opposite from my personal/creative work. Which made it hard at times for sure. Felt a little like I was “selling my soul”. I’ll not lie and say it was easy. Hundreds of jobs I didn’t wanna take along the way. But it all built to the position I’m in now. For that I’m grateful.

I guess what I’m trying to say in all this is; keep going if this is your passion. It dosent have to ever make you money. You don’t HAVE to shoot the corporate event, or family portraits, or weddings. You can make it simply pursuing what you want. Not here to snuff dreams, just give some encouragement to keep going and sharing the path that worked for me.

Your joy of the process is what will keep you going. Share your pictures daily, or never share them at all. None of that matters at the core. How it makes you feel is all that is important.

    Happy shooting to you all!
    🖤

I think social media made it hard to make money being a photographer. Cause people feel like everyone can do it cause everyone has a cell phone. Which isn’t true. But yeah. Everyone wants to make money with this shit. Those are the ones who usually fall off quick and give up.

i think its whatever if ppl who just picked up a camera wanna make money off it, its hard out here. It seems like thats messin up the game but the thing is, these ppl gonna be garbage off rip, so the clients they get arent even gonna be clients u lose cuz their clients are not the ppl who will ask u to shoot for them. Discerning clients with money not gonna go to the newbie who dont got the skills yet. Everyone can eat, let these new folks make they lil $50/2hr shoot to shoot somebodys cupcake side hustle. Its lame but it dont affect ur money at the end of the day…. those who get into photography for the love are gonna exceed way past the ppl doing it for the money.

Wow these are some amazing tips! My side hustle has been offerup for the last four years and I flip 95% of my inventory locally. I still make 4 figures a month by going to yard sales around me and flipping things without even shipping. I really like your side hustle knowledge and was thinking it would be great to jump on a podcast that I’ve been working on. Direct Message me on Instagram @flipmandan

the money part of photography really does bore me. if your into it just for green try another scene. i primarily shoot concerts, conventions and street now and again. develop and eye first, learn to capture the moment , fast lenses, great glass and pick your best shots. mostly shot for, myself. kind of salty, yet at the same time nobody was in there doing nothing about it so i went in just snapping pictures and found out i had an eye for it. for me a camera is an extension of my eyeholes. editing is the monotony of it. shoot for fun, if you get paid sometimes fine. Ghostmonkeyproductions is my name, i'll snap your picture quick and go away. i'm ghost monkey snap snap sorry . most of the time i'm shooting in bars. low light, or potato shit light. aint nothing gonna focus in their.

photographers have always been notorious for making things sound more than what they are, or for talking around a topic without getting to specifics. And the race to get followers, catch phrase labels of "influencer" or "creative" has amplified it. Some of that came from a sense of keeping job security. Many misconceptions about the business and money side, especially now with leveraging youtube and other social media avenues, could be dispelled if people would be upfront about what and where it is that they are making their money from. Their revenue may actually be coming indirectly from photography. Which is just fine. But you need to be more aware of that. Saying "I'm a published photographer" in an IG bio line or being an influencer who's a fashion photographer, but they're not shooting ads or for actual makers of clothes, they are just getting together with attractive girls in outfits and it's youtube ads is where they are making their living, then it does add to the misconceptions.

In the years since accepting the label and being comfortable with being a photographer, I've learned a lot. I learned, even more, when I started speaking but still felt something was missing. People have to realize there is no magic bullet or formula for making money in photography. If you do, count yourself luck especially with the easy access to gear and the low bar of what's acceptable as photography. A lot of people only pick up their camera if there is money involved which is why so many fail; especially if they're only a 1 trick pony.

I remember going to speak at WPPI a few years ago and a colleague asked me why I was doing what I was doing. I told him it wasn't to make money because I'm always broke but despite that reality, I still kept picking up my camera. Mind you, I have unique challenges in that I shoot from a wheelchair and I can't do everything I would want without some plan or creative perspectives but I fucking do it.

I'm glad I came across your channel and glad to see you making an impact. I hope I get the opportunity to talk with you one day but in the meantime keep up the work!

I remember talking to a wedding photographer and he was speaking about another guy who shoots weddings who used to be a DOP and he's like "he's good because he's got the eye"

I'm thinking, "what the hell does that even mean? Surely every photographer has to have the eye and that's why they gravitated towards photography as a business"

Seems there's plenty of photographers out there with no talent but who are charging for it nonetheless
