I'm not sure why, but every time I watch you two, I have a smile on my face 🙂 I think it must be your positive energy and smiles, and the way you interact with each other. You two really do make the world a brighter place ⭐ Thank you for creating this awesome channel for all of us to learn from and enjoy 😊
@BoninBrighton
I’ve been earning a small amount by doing guided tours of my home City via MeetUp it’s not a lot but it is a hobby that pays for itself….
@ericmyers3561
Nice tee Norm
@bestyou774
Another very interesting albeit slightly depressing video. I am planning to retire in May next year at 64. I have been dreaming about cocktail bars and lovely meals out etc but what you seem to be saying is forget all that and get yourself a scrabble board and have a few cans at home. Its the stuff of dreams 😀
@lyndawilson1874
Great advice! My hubby and I have always lived by this, so we’ll be all set for retiring! We don’t like crowds or eating out. We explore new recipes together and learn to train our brain games and fun trails to walk or bike on. Love your videos!! 😀🙏🏼🇨🇦
@jsg497
Great to see how your channel / subscribers are growing. I started listening to you during pandemic … I retired in ‘22, moved from Montreal to Vancouver island. Soon, Vancouver. Rent is sky high but I stopped eating out. I’ve always paid credit card in full every month. Will return to teaching part time bc I want to …
@randymillhouse791
I recall seeing a commercial on TV about an exercise machine and was watching this with my brother-in-law. The narrator said, "stores away quickly and easily." My brother-in-law immediately interjected: "FOREVER!"
@Magickmoon-bf2zz
hey
@MsLinda165
This is great advice. Budgets are the saving grace. I once demonstrated to a colleage how much her Tim Horton's habit was costing her a year, and she was shocked. Between her and her husband, they were spending $3000 a year. I said, how cool would it be to have that amount to go to Mexico, or better yet, pay down your mortgage? Just bring your own tea from home (yes, it wasn't even coffee!!) and save yourself. Tim Hortons won't go broke just because your 3K is no longer in their pocket.
@valeriemason9615
I love your videos! I have been watching them for a few years. I always learn something new. I am a single woman, in my late 50s. I have lived on a moderate income for years and always found frugal and creative ways to enjoy life. One strategy for eating out frugally, is ordering a salad and sandwich with my girlfriends and sharing it. Picnics, libraries, walking, kayaking, biking, accessing the local libraries, cheap local theatre, as well as entertaining and exercising at home are all simple cost effective ways of living. I got rid of my cable and landline 12 years ago. I have Netflix and a Roku stick. I am from Canada. I have Chatr cell service which is $45 (tax incl.) a month. I refill my water bottle at home. Thanks for your wonderful advice. I will be selling my home for my retirement fund as well. Happy summer!
@janetkenny4861
Best advise my financial planner gave me was figure out my post retirement budget and estimated income, and live on that at least a year before I am actually not working anymore. I’ve been doing this 8 months and find that I am comfortable living on about 73% of my net, which is where I will be with my retirement income. Biggest positive is I’m saving the extra. 7 months left of working.
@sudburydrone466
👍👍✌️
@NarsilRenewed
Always enjoy your videos, thank you! Would you pls make a video about stock market investing for Canadians nearing retirement?
@opuntia56
We go to a free gym at a senior citizen center that's free too. It has state of the art weight resistant machines using air pressure rather than weight disks. Also trained center attendants, is owned by our health insurance Co. but any older adult can attend. Other classes , card games, puzzles, movies, and invited speakers are there too.
@evadeanu1
Ok. I’m going to try Folgers coffee. I bought it 20 years ago and didn’t like it. I’ll try again
@RyansuBike
By the end of the year Knock wood I will have cleared my debts. Its taken me about 18 months but I am so looking forward to seeing zeros in my credit balances!
@cuz129
Credit card debt is crazy. Never do that!
@hivolco151
I really dislike Fast food… it's the worst! I also do not care much for restaurant food… If I go out for a meal.. it's for the atmosphere, Music, chatter, or view, And since I don't care for food that is mostly "mass produced" frozen and reheated in a microwave… with a little garnish that might be fresh… so yeah… YUCK! When I go to Hawaii… I stay in a condo with a nice kitchen… and I eat all meals IN! Saving hundreds of dollars! For exercise my town has a Senior Center to go play games or do puzzles and also choose from different exercise classes… so yeah… Free ! Annually there is a donation drive.. but otherwise it's free.
@hivolco151
Love Pink Floyd.. nice shirt Norm!
@dodgerblue7381
I really like you guys, good advice and I have been doing it, one thing if I may disagree with you. I use my credit card to pay for everything. I then pay it off each month so that there is no interest charge. It is a rewards card so I get 2% back in the form of gift cards from retailers. Good way to buy clothes like Pink Floyd shirts. I have to say that I would go for Ozzy Osbourne shirt. If you are not structured enough to pay off your card monthly then stay away from credit cards.
@carolynadams1249
We share a lot of your ideas on saving money, luckily for us Tim Hortons closed out in our town about 12 months ago and we got into buying the Tim Hortons original blend fine grind coffee at the grocery store and do our own, I am sure that saves us a lot in calories as well because we no longer pick up the sweets from there. I do have one question I would like your opinion on, we have some land/property without buildings on it in town and I’m wondering if now is not a good time to sell, because the price of housing and property has certainly gone up over the last two years, we are getting close to our 70s and love to travel right now, but inevitably we will have to slow down as health issues are starting to arise.
@carolynadams1249
We do not have any fine dining restaurants in our community and we probably eat out about once a month, but you really tweaked my interest with saying you make some good meals at home. What is your favourite recipe or meal to make and would you mind sharing it with me.
@Bran08Eman
You guys are masters of what couples retirement can be. Wonderful tips. Like any good strategist, I pick what I splurge on. Usually non-reoccurring events like 40tb wedding anniversary or 60th birthday etc. Love cooking at home, yet we do eat out to give the stove a break. Bulk buy wine and spirits every few months. Love your idea to face time with old friends for drinks.
@onthebeachinsitges
Learn to cook world cuisine. Grow herbs in your garden. A nice bottle of wine. Cheap, productive, satisfying.
@bshef3424
Thanks Norm and Tina…always a pleasure – 🎵"Ticking away….the moments that make up a dull day"……..with you 2!…..
WE LOVE OUR INSTANT POT for home cooking! ✨🍽💥
@cecemoon1208
I’m a new subscriber. You guys are witty :).
@davidfolts5893
Shine on you crazy diamonds.😀
@eigobike3929
Imagine almost $100k in student loans from a child’s recent university and a $200k mortgage at 60 without a regular salary. It makes drinking at home a temptation and a peril. Gyms and restaurants do suck up money and time. Buy a bicycle for sure.
@eigobike3929
A book for 10 dollars lasts for weeks. Portable, entertaining, cheap. Eating at home is actually a time saver too.
@eigobike3929
Your videos are keeping my hope alive. I’m stuck in a hole at 60. Funny also how you mentioned Madeira and Iceland which are the two places I plan to visit this summer.
@cmbooks2000
As we approached 60 we began paying off cars, mortgages, never had credit card debt, and now we are able to live comfortably. Thank you for great advice and food for thought
@mhaagmans1
This was probably already somewhere in the comments. Couldn't read all 675, but some money sinkers in my observation. I was a frugal person emigrated to the US from the NL, via Montreal Canada in 1984. Here is where I see people spend/waste a lot of money.
1. Cars. Lots of people buy large, expensive, new cars, on credit (I've bought exactly 1 new car, a VW Jetta (Golf in CA) Sportswagon) because it was cheaper than buying it used. And as it turned out with the Dieselgate scandal. After 2.5 years of owning the car, we got about $2,500 more back for the car than we paid for it. Our latest car, a Honda Fit 2011, increased $4,000 in value on the last year as we are selling it to Carvana in 2 weeks. Go figure. Luck? Yes, mostly. Did I tell you that we're moving to Portugal in a few weeks.
2. Cable TV subscription (slowly making room for streaming services)
3. Superfast Internet service. We had the choice between 100 Mb/s or 1 Gb/s. for $20 more a month. Since we came from 12 Mb/s which was more than adequate, we saved the $200
4. Cell phone plans. Do you really need that unlimited data plan? We constantly shop around and have gone with Consumer Cellular, Google Fi and currently Tello. All had excellent service and currently we're paying $10/month for 1 GB of data. More than enough, considering we have internet at home.
5. Cell phones. >$1,000 really, what if you break it (my biggest fear)
6. Brand name buying everything. There is a premium to buy fancy brand names, not talking Gucci, but Nike or Patagonia etc. I buy most of my attire at Costco, best value for money.
7. Coffee out.
8. Eating out.
9. Drinking out.
10. Unused gym or club memberships.
11. All the things I forgot. Anything obvious?
A lot of these things come down to putting in the time, doing research, doing the legwork. I think a lot of people aren't willing to do that or just don't have the time with their 2 jobs or long hours at the one job. I always look at trying to reduce reoccurring payments.
I was lucky to get my education in the Netherlands where it was basically free.
Now that we've saved, invested and grew all that money, we need to learn to be generous to ourselves and others and spend a little more. It's hard when you've always been frugal. It's a process. Any tips on that?
@freedomlife3623
I am surprised nobody mentioned to use expense tracking Apps. There is lots of them on App Store, they produce reports with Categories that you can customize. You can also keep receipts for warranty. I use one called “Home Budget”, had tracking my saving and expense for 10 years now. So I know exactly where did our money go and how much we have saved. It really reduced stress for us.
@GunnyPhillips
You had me at "drink at home." We're gonna get along just fine. 😊
@jeffbeasom5227
We charge everything on our credit card, including bills and get 2.62% cash back on every purchase since we have our IRA at the same bank. We pay it off every month and never pay interest.
@rodhurst5831
Great tips, I’ve been doing most of them my whole life and it does pay off.
Ps I’ve got what is considered the finest dark side CD pressing (Japanese) ever made ( cost me a few bucks for that one ( $50🇨🇦 10 years ago ).
@crystalfolse3208
Thanks
@ronedee
On credit cards; if you can find one that pays you in cash points, and/or has a 0% rate for a period of time? I see no reason not to take advantage of those deals and let your money gain interest in an account.
@margaretf6147
I read the odds are so poor of winning the lottery that your chance of winning is the same even if you don’t buy a ticket lol.
@dianeosgood6594
Agree with all of this. Getting set of weights is great idea. Also, in my 30's I discovered work out videos. I have about 40 videos now. It's like having a personal trainer with music in your home. No travel to work out. Can get up and work out before breakfast. Taking walk is great, especially in a park on a nice day. Eating & having coffee at home saves so much money. Getting takeout of dishes you love once a month is fun.
@jenniferjohnson6559
My husband and I just found your YouTube channel and have enjoyed it. He retired at 47 and I retired by default lol. We were concerned if we had enough money, etc. We live a simple life but that doesnt mean we go without! One thing also is some of the great thrift stores we have around us or a short drive away and have saved hundreds of dollars easily whether it was for some ‘new outfits’ or household items we needed! Keep up the great work, its been fun, beneficial and encouraging!
@NipItInTheBud100
Bonding time with your spouse? Now your talking crazy….LOL
@Leftists_are_Losers
If you do choose to drink at home, you don’t have to worry about getting arrested for Driving while Intoxicated…
